Rick - great to hear your feedback to that list. I agree with the point you make (or, rather, that Rand makes) about computers complicating the process, but it is hard to separate out the generational shift aspect – I wonder if he was just as much a product of his time.

I read Conversations with Students over breakfast this morning, just as Alex mentioned it being that kind of book. Technically I'm a year late on this thread, but hey, it's an exciting new find for me.

While I agree that Rand's views of the computer may have been a bit dated, I believe his assertions that the computer complicates the process of those learning and applying the principles of design to be true. Before I knew gestalt theory, I was already knee deep in photoshop and illustrator. If I was "designing", it certainly wasn't good design. Looking back, this was completely backwards. Reading this book made me crave the kind of stinging critiques you had mentioned his students came to love. That kind of honesty is more helpful than any of the "I like it" or "I love its" that plague classroom critiques. That gives the designer nothing!!

Anyway, as per our previous correspondence I have purchased the better half of your suggested reading list. On a nightly basis I am paving my way to a clearer understanding of where I want my work to be and how I want to accomplish it. Thank you again for the suggestions and reviews.

I've recently picked up Steven Heller's book on Rand and it's a monster (in a fantastic kind of way) but I have to admit, while all that information and such a strong look at his life an accomplishments is fantastic, it's not great as an introductory or light-taste of his work and thoughts.. where as Conversations with Students seems like a great 'read it over breakfast' kind of book

Alex Charchar's last blog post..The Sketches of Leonardo

Baerbel - One of Rand's own books would be good, but if you want a book about him rather than written by him, check out Steven Heller's book.

I really enjoyed this little book. A very insightful look at the genius, and humanity, of one of the greats.
