I own this book by myself. And it took me a while to figure out that these croppings must be intentional. As you pointed out, they are not daring enough. As a native German i was not sure about wether the written english was bad, the translation or just my understanding of language. I stopped reading, too. And i was disappointed by the small DVD-Movies as well.

But hey, i always dreamt of writing this book. Did i do it? Nay. And this collection of titles in a book is nice. I think no one will criticise the general collection. I know no other book giving a broad overview like this. (Ok, Gattaca should have been in there.) So i am glad to have this book even with its faults.

It could have become a standard work (is that »Standardwerk« in english?), but this opportunity was given away. Sad.

(If i may, i like to mention the website watchthetiltles.com There is a cool DVD-Set showing sweet title animations.)

Hi Doug - thanks for letting us know about that. Interesting to track down the original artists and designers for some of those titles. It would be great to see movies of them though.

After reading the most recent posts on your blog I'm surprised at the interest in the history of film title design. You and your readers may be interested in our website mgm-movie-titles-and-credits.com. There is over 30 years of research on MGM's 1930-1940's film title design with graphics. Enjoy -----doug

P.S. Please feel free to comment.

Uncredited does have some good history in it, that's probably it's main strength. But if you want good examples and decent commentary and interviews, I recommend the web site, Art of the Title.

Like you said:It is a vibrant area of design that has remained strangely undocumented.
It's really hard to find a book is about the development and history about title sequence in film. (mostly are intro the techinc things)
Actually I'm now doing research about opening title sequence in film, but coulden't find and good research materials...
Do you know any other books or journal is about opening title sequence in film?
Thanks

Azur - Thanks for letting us know. That is a bit depressing to hear though, I really hoped it was just a bad translation so that there could be some salvation for Spanish speakers. (And your English is fine!).

I'm from Spain and I have the spanish version of the book, and YES, the texts are really boring and the authors always use the same adjectives. It looks like a 10 year old child written it. I tried to read it, but I quitted, it's a shame. Finally I only looked at the frames. Really enjoyed the DVD.

Sorry for my bad English,

Congratulations for your blog, I really like it.

Joe - Good point. But no, I'm not interested in "only" the most overexposed designers. I used Cooper as an example because many would know of the Se7en titles, but I would have happily read a decent interview with any of the title designers mentioned in the book rather than snippets seemingly gleaned from other interviews. As long as the designer in question has something good to offer, it's irrelevant how much exposure they have is it not?

You wanted yet another interview with Kyle Cooper?

So you're interested in only the most overexposed designers?

It is still interesting for the set of title sequences they have gone through, it's just such a disappointment the way it has been put together. I had been really looking forward to it too.

It's always difficult to know whether to post negative reviews too, but for the higher ratings to have any worth, it is important to have the full range. It is also part of the reason for the DRB in the first place – this is a book that is one of those that is visually relatively interesting, but textually a fail. Good to know that the negatives are also appreciated.
